Why Are Handmade Watercolors Without Industrial Preservation Systems Better Stored as Solid Paints?
Solid storage has become the preferred approach through long-term material observation
During the production of handmade watercolors, the material exists in both liquid and solid states. Freshly prepared paint remains liquid during processing before naturally drying into solid watercolor pans.
Based on long-term production and storage observations, handmade watercolors that are not formulated with industrial preservation and stabilization systems are now preferentially stored in solid form rather than being maintained as liquid paint for extended periods.
This approach has developed from long-term material observation and practical storage experiments rather than from a fixed manufacturing rule.
Long-term experiments were carried out using sealed liquid samples
To better understand how the material changes over time, long-term storage experiments were carried out using liquid watercolor samples sealed inside closed containers.
During these observations, a portion of the samples gradually developed noticeable gas accumulation inside the sealed containers after extended storage.
As storage continued, increased internal pressure was observed in some containers, with visible signs that pressure inside the containers was continuing to build.
Based on these long-term observations, liquid storage was no longer adopted as the preferred method for long-term preservation within this material system.
Solid paint has shown greater long-term storage stability
Long-term material observations indicate that once the paint has completed its natural drying process and reached a solid state, the material generally remains more stable during storage.
Compared with long-term liquid storage, similar gas accumulation inside sealed containers has not been commonly observed after the paint has fully dried into solid watercolor pans.
For this reason, solid storage has become the preferred long-term storage format within this particular material system.
Different material systems require different storage approaches
The handmade watercolors described here are produced without industrial preservatives, industrial biocides, or industrial stabilization systems intended to support extended liquid storage.
As a result, their long-term storage characteristics differ from those of industrially formulated liquid paints.
Based on current long-term observations, solid storage is better suited to the long-term preservation of this material system, while the liquid state primarily serves as a temporary stage during production rather than a format intended for extended storage.
Long-term material observation continues
The current understanding of liquid and solid storage is based on long-term production records and storage experiments.
As additional colors, material systems, and longer observation periods continue to be documented, the understanding of long-term storage behavior will continue to develop and become part of the ongoing material archive for handmade watercolors.
