During long-term storage, environmental conditions may continue to influence the surface, internal structure, and overall stability of handmade watercolor paints. For this reason, storage conditions are also considered an important part of long-term material observation.
The following recommendations are based on long-term observations of different material systems. They are intended as general guidance rather than fixed rules, as individual materials may respond differently to their environment.
A dry storage environment generally supports long-term stability
Humidity remains an important environmental variable after production has been completed.
When watercolor paints are stored in consistently humid environments, some material systems may gradually absorb moisture from the surrounding air. Long-term observations show that this may result in softer surfaces, slight tackiness, or, under certain conditions, an increased likelihood of mold development.
For this reason, a relatively dry storage environment is generally preferred for long-term preservation.
Outdoor storage is generally not recommended
Outdoor environments are subject to continuous environmental change.
Rainfall, elevated humidity, condensation, and seasonal weather variations may expose watercolor paints to prolonged moisture.
For this reason, handmade watercolor paints are generally stored indoors rather than being kept outdoors for extended periods.
Direct sunlight and elevated temperatures should be avoided whenever possible

Paint boxes, storage cases, and other containers are generally best kept clean and dry. Allowing moisture to accumulate inside the storage container may introduce additional environmental influences that can affect the condition of the paints over time.
Maintaining a dry storage container supports more consistent long-term storage conditions.
Leaving a small space between paint pans may be beneficial
Under humid conditions, the surface of some material systems may gradually become more responsive to moisture.
Long-term observations show that certain honey watercolor paints may develop slight surface tackiness when exposed to elevated humidity. If neighboring paint pans remain in continuous contact, their surfaces may occasionally adhere to one another or allow small amounts of adjacent colors to come into contact.
Leaving a small gap between paint pans may help reduce the likelihood of this occurring.
Periodic inspection supports long-term preservation
Long-term storage also benefits from occasional observation of the material.
Checking the paints periodically for changes such as surface irregularities, mold growth, unusual softening, or other visible changes can help identify material changes at an early stage.
Paints that are used regularly are often observed during normal use, while less frequently used colors may simply benefit from occasional inspection during storage.
