In making handmade honey watercolors, changing seasons do not only alter room temperature. Together with air humidity and evaporation rates, climate continuously shapes the entire process from pouring to complete drying.

  • Summer conditions:
    Higher temperatures accelerate water evaporation. After pouring, the surface structure of the paint changes noticeably faster, requiring adjustments to the working schedule.
  • Winter conditions:
    Lower temperatures and altered air moisture slow down moisture loss. The drying process lengthens, and the paint requires significantly more time to reach a stable state.
  • Material-specific differences:
    Different types of pigments react to climate variations with varying intensity. While honey watercolors show clear reactions, changes in other paint lines remain less pronounced.

The Physical State of Honey as a Binder

The physical state of honey before processing directly affects the uniformity and flow behavior of the final binder system.

1. Natural crystallization and state changes
During storage, raw honey may gradually change from a uniform liquid into solid crystals of varying sizes. This hardening is a natural material behavior. If crystallized honey enters the binder, it disturbs the uniform mix, as solid crystal structures flow differently compared to liquid honey.

2. Objective of raw material preparation
Before mixing the binder, bringing the honey back to a uniform, liquid consistency ensures a consistent mixing process. Methods used to restore fluidity aim to bring the material back to its original liquid state, reducing variables caused by raw material fluctuations.

3. Material selection criteria
Not all types of honey are suitable for watercolor binders. For example, royal jelly differs fundamentally in its composition and is not used. Honey with extreme crystallization or poor flow is also excluded. Fluid liquid honey forms the proper foundation. Selection relies on actual fluidity and system compatibility rather than product names.

Pigment Properties and Individual Formula Adjustments

There is no single fixed formula for handmade watercolors. The physical properties of each pigment particle determine its specific production parameters.

Unlike industrial production that uses automated heating equipment to force rapid drying, making handmade honey watercolors relies on slow, natural drying and settling under ambient conditions.

1. Drying duration by color
After pouring into pans, contained water evaporates slowly, causing the material structure to settle and compact naturally. Depending on pigment properties, this process takes from several weeks to several months. Even colors poured on the exact same day reach a stable final state at different times due to particle differences.

2. Handcrafted surface characteristics
Due to small-batch pouring and natural drying, fine air pockets, light shrinkage marks, or subtle surface textures may form. These physical features result directly from moisture evaporating from the material. They are typical of the natural process and do not affect rewetting or color activation during painting.
