Why Are Unfilled Liquid Handmade Watercolors Stored in Cool, Dark Conditions?

During the production of handmade watercolors, not every color is filled immediately after mixing.
Some colors, particularly those with longer production cycles, remain in their liquid state for a period of time before the filling process begins.
Long-term material observations have shown that storing these unfilled liquid paints in cool, dark conditions can noticeably slow material changes during storage. As a result, this has become one of the standard storage practices throughout the production process.
Liquid materials continue to change during storage
Long-term storage experiments have shown that unfilled liquid watercolor paints continue to change even while they are being stored.
During experiments using sealed containers, some liquid samples gradually developed noticeable gas accumulation after extended storage. In some cases, increasing internal pressure was also observed within the containers over time.
These observations indicate that liquid materials remain active during storage rather than existing in a completely stable state.
Cool storage can slow the rate of material change
Based on current long-term observations, storing unfilled liquid watercolor paints at low temperatures generally slows the rate at which material changes occur.
Although cool storage does not completely prevent further changes, it has consistently extended the period during which the material remains suitable for later filling.
This becomes particularly important for colors that require longer production schedules.
Honey watercolor paints often require longer production cycles
Among the material systems currently produced, honey watercolor paints frequently require longer production and observation periods.
For some colors, a considerable amount of time may pass between the initial mixing stage and the final filling process.
Long-term observations have shown that materials stored continuously at room temperature are more likely to change before filling is completed. Cool storage extends the usable liquid storage period and provides greater flexibility throughout the production process.
Protection from direct light is equally important
In addition to cool storage, protection from direct light has also become part of the long-term storage practice.
Long-term observations indicate that high temperatures and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can accelerate material changes while the paint remains in its liquid state.
For this reason, unfilled liquid handmade watercolors are typically stored under both cool and dark conditions until they are ready for filling.
Liquid storage remains a temporary stage
Although cool and dark storage can significantly slow material changes, long-term observations indicate that liquid storage remains a temporary stage within the production process rather than a long-term storage method.
The paints are therefore filled within an appropriate production period and allowed to dry naturally into solid watercolor pans for long-term storage.
As additional colors, longer observation periods, and new material systems continue to be documented, the understanding of storage-related material behavior will continue to expand as part of the long-term material archive.
