Why Different Watercolors Develop Different Surface Appearances After Drying

Not every watercolor dries with the same surface appearance

Long-term production observations show that different watercolors do not all develop the same surface appearance after drying.

Some colors dry with a smooth and even surface, while others develop subtle textures, slight depressions, fine surface cracks, or other visible characteristics. Some remain almost unchanged throughout the drying process.

These differences do not occur in every color and have become one of the recurring material observations documented in the Production Archive.


Every pigment contributes its own material characteristics

Long-term comparisons have shown that each pigment possesses its own material characteristics.

As water gradually evaporates during drying, pigments respond differently to moisture loss, volume changes, and the formation of the final surface. Because of these natural differences, colors produced under similar conditions may still develop noticeably different surface appearances.

The final appearance therefore reflects the behavior of the material itself rather than a single production step.


The binder also contributes to the final result

The binder plays an equally important role in the development of the final surface.

Long-term production observations show that both the binder formulation and the quantity of binder can influence how a watercolor appears after drying. Rather than acting independently, pigments and binders work together throughout the drying process.

The final surface appearance is therefore the result of the complete material system rather than any single component.


Environmental conditions also influence the drying process

Production records collected over many years show that environmental conditions also contribute to the final appearance of a watercolor.

Temperature, humidity, air movement, and drying speed all influence how the materials interact as the paint dries. As a result, even when the same materials are used, different production environments may produce slightly different surface appearances.

Surface appearance alone does not determine painting performance

Years of production and practical use have shown that the final surface appearance does not necessarily predict how a watercolor will perform when painting.

Many colors develop noticeably different surfaces after drying while still activating, dissolving, and performing normally when rewetted.

Only in relatively uncommon situations, such as significant separation between the binder and the pigment or other pronounced material changes, may the surface appearance be associated with changes in painting performance.
