Why Different Pigments Can Produce Similar Colors in Watercolor

Different pigments can often be distinguished easily in their dry powder form.
Even before processing, pigments may differ noticeably in hue, brightness, or color temperature. Some appear darker, others warmer or cooler, making the visual differences between dry pigments relatively easy to recognize.
These differences, however, do not always remain equally visible after the pigments have been made into watercolor paints.

The visual appearance changes during the making of the paint
Once a pigment is combined with a binder, its appearance enters a new stage.
The finished watercolor no longer presents the pigment in the same way as the dry powder. Only after the paint is applied to paper does its visual character become fully observable within the conditions of painting.
As a result, the relationship between different colors may also change.

Distinct pigments can become visually similar
Two pigments that appear clearly different as dry powders may produce surprisingly similar colors when painted.
Although their original appearance suggests a considerable difference, their painted washes can become much closer in color than expected. The differences do not disappear completely, but they may become far less pronounced than they were in the dry state.
The visual relationship between colors therefore changes together with the material itself.

Observation continues beyond the pigment
Understanding a color does not end with observing the pigment alone.
Comparing the dry powder, the finished watercolor, and the painted wash reveals how the same material changes throughout different stages of its development. Each stage contributes additional information that cannot be obtained from a single observation.
A more complete understanding of a color develops only when these stages are considered together.

Similar colors do not necessarily originate from the same pigment
A similar painted appearance does not automatically indicate the same pigment.
Different pigments may produce remarkably similar colors once applied to paper, even though they are easily distinguished in their dry form. Likewise, pigments that appear similar before processing may become more distinct after painting.
The relationship between pigments and visible color therefore remains an ongoing subject of observation.

Color relationships continue to develop through observation
Documenting color extends beyond identifying individual pigments.
Each comparison contributes additional context, allowing previously documented colors to be understood from new perspectives. Similarities may become more apparent, while differences may become either more subtle or more pronounced depending on the stage being observed.
Color documentation therefore records not only individual colors, but also how the relationships between them change throughout different stages of observation.
