Natural Odor as an Inherent Material Trait

During the production of handmade watercolors, gum arabic is observed to possess its own natural odor.

This odor originates directly from the raw material itself rather than emerging during paint making. As a core component of the binder system, this natural scent remains present within the finished watercolor system.


Scent Shift Across Batches

Material logs show that the odor intensity of gum arabic varies from batch to batch.

  • Noticeable natural odor: Select batches present a clearly noticeable scent profile.
  • Milder natural odor: Other batches display a noticeably milder scent by comparison.

Influence of Raw Material Origin

Batches of gum arabic used in production differ in origin, such as harvesting regions, acacia tree species, or local growing conditions.

These differences in origin reflect as shifts in the raw material's natural odor. Individual batches therefore do not necessarily share an identical scent character.


Presence Within the Complete Paint System

When gum arabic is combined with pigments, honey, and other components into a complete watercolor system, its natural odor remains noticeable.

Because both the pigments and the batches of gum arabic change across production runs, the overall scent profile varies from shade to shade.


Handling Material Odor in Production

No additional substances are introduced during processing to cover, alter, or neutralize the natural odor of gum arabic.

The odor is accepted as an inherent property of the raw material and left unadjusted. Scent differences across batches continue to be recorded as part of material logging.
