VHaquarell Yellow Watercolors: An Objective Comparison

Victoria Hilbrecht

VHaquarell views every color as part of a complete system. Comparing multiple colors directly under identical conditions makes it much easier to observe differences in hue, transparency, particle structure, and visual behavior than looking at a single color alone.

This comparison covers three yellow shades: Lemon Yellow, Real Yellow, and Indian Yellow. All belong to the yellow family, but each demonstrates distinct characteristics in color direction, temperature, material structure, and visual weight.

1. Characteristics and Differences of the Three Yellows

Observed from left to right, the three colors show a continuous transition from a cooler yellow to a warmer yellow:

  • Lemon Yellow

    • Color Direction: Positioned on the far left, this is the coolest tone among the three yellows, with relatively high brightness and saturation.

    • Material and Texture: Displays a fine, smooth layer structure. The pigment grain is subtle, and the paint spreads very evenly across the paper. It offers wide flexibility for smooth, continuous dilution with water.

    • Visual Behavior: In high concentrations, it shows a rich orange-yellow appearance. As it is diluted, it retains its warm underlying tone. Its visual weight is higher than both Lemon Yellow and Real Yellow.

  • Real Yellow

    • Color Direction: Located between Lemon Yellow and Indian Yellow, this serves as a neutral mid-tone that is neither distinctly cool nor excessively warm. The hue remains stable across varying color densities, forming a natural transition.

    • Material and Texture: Maintains high transparency, with slightly reduced grain compared to Lemon Yellow.

    • Visual Behavior: Features high saturation, combining evenness with visible material texture while maintaining an overall bright presence.

  • Indian Yellow

    • Color Direction: Positioned on the far right, this is the warmest yellow in the set, shifting visibly toward orange-yellow with a pronounced warm character.

    • Material and Texture: Creates a fine, smooth layer structure with low grain and very uniform distribution. It provides the highest transparency in the group, remaining light-permeable even when layered multiple times.

    • Visual Behavior: Applied densely, it presents a strong yellow shade that keeps its warm tendency even when heavily diluted. Its visual weight is higher than both Lemon Yellow and Real Yellow.

2. Role of VHaquarell Yellows in Mixing Systems

Yellow is a foundational component in many color combinations. In the VHaquarell mixing system, different yellows serve clear, practical functions. The transition from cool to warm provides straightforward mixing properties:

  • Combined with blue, it creates green ranges.

  • Combined with red, it creates orange ranges.

  • Combined with earth tones, it creates natural earth shades.

3. Format and Packaging

All colors in this set are made in standard half-pan formats. The half-pan size saves space in palettes, making organization and transport easy. Individual half pans allow you to observe differences between the yellows side by side and combine them as needed. The half pans remain stable during long-term storage and can be reactivated with water at any time.

Video materials documenting the handmade production process and pigment behavior are preserved in the independent material research project VHacademy (paid access).
