Observation of Violet Watercolors: Ultra Violet, Violet, and Ultramarine Violet
Victoria HilbrechtMagenta sits between red and blue, marking an important transition zone from warm to cool color systems. This observation group includes three shades in standard half pans: Ultra Violet, Violet, and Ultramarine Violet. While all three belong to the violet family, they display distinct color tendencies and material characteristics along a continuous path between warm and cool spectrums.
In the VHaquarell series, each color is observed individually and compared alongside neighboring shades. When multiple colors are placed side by side under identical conditions, objective differences in hue, brightness, transparency, layer structure, and visual weight become much easier to recognize.

1. Characteristics and Differences of the Three Violet Tones
Observed from left to right, these three colors form a continuous progression from a warm red-violet to a neutral violet, extending into a cool blue-violet:
- Ultra Violet
- Color Direction: Positioned on the far left, connecting to the magenta system. Displays a clear inclination toward a warm violet with noticeable magenta characteristics.
- Dilution & Brightness: Holds the highest brightness and the lightest visual weight among the three colors. Reveals multi-layered shifts at high concentration; transitions step-by-step into a light violet and lavender shade when diluted, while retaining its warm inclination.
- Texture & Transparency: Demonstrates good transparency alongside natural layer transitions, presenting a light overall visual effect.


- Violet
- Color Direction: Positioned in the middle, forming the center of the violet system. Preserves a typical, balanced violet character without leaning noticeably toward red or blue. Contains a higher proportion of blue than Ultra Violet while retaining more warm components than Ultramarine Violet.
- Overall Balance: Displays medium brightness and color density, holding a balanced visual weight between the other two shades.
- Texture & Transparency: Maintains good transparency and acts as a neutral transition between warm and cool violet tones.


- Ultramarine Violet
- Color Direction: Positioned on the far right, sitting closest to the blue system. Shows a clear tendency toward a cool blue-violet with an increased blue proportion.
- Color Density & Weight: Holds the lowest brightness, the darkest value, and the highest visual weight among the three colors. Reveals deep blue-violet characteristics at high concentration; forms a gradual transition between blue-violet and cool violet when diluted.
- Texture & Structure: Presents a calm overall visual expression with a clear structure, bridging the violet and blue systems.


2. Transparency and Dried Surface Structure
- Transparency: The colors in this group belong to a semi-transparent watercolor system. All three shades possess good color saturation, forming clear gradient shifts while preserving the material characteristics of the pigments.
- Dried State: The paints dry to a natural matte surface overall without creating noticeable shine.
- Layer Distribution: Under varying water ratios, continuous color transitions from dark to light violet layers can be observed alongside their individual layer structures.

3. Behavior in Color Mixing Systems
- With Red and Magenta Tones: Ultra Violet easily moves toward warm violet and wine-red violet directions.
- With Yellow Tones: All three colors establish clear complementary relationships.
- With Blue Tones: Ultramarine Violet extends further into cool violet and deep blue-violet areas.
- With Green Tones: Forms clear contrasts between warm and cool tones.

4. Format and Storage
All colors in this group are produced in the standard half pan format. This specification allows many colors to fit into a compact space. Placing warm, neutral, and cool violet shades side by side in individual half pans makes it easy to compare differences in color temperature, transparency, and color depth directly, while simplifying long-term storage, sorting, and daily carrying.
