Observation of Red Watercolors: Scarlet, Real Red, and Carmine
Victoria HilbrechtRed is one of the core colors in the watercolor mixing system and an essential component of orange, violet, and numerous natural color combinations. This observation group includes three red tones in standard half pans: Scarlet, Real Red, and Carmine. While all three belong to the red color family, each presents distinct color directions and material characteristics.
In the VHaquarell series, each color is observed individually and compared alongside neighboring shades. When multiple colors are placed side by side under identical conditions, differences in hue, brightness, transparency, layer structure, and visual weight become much easier to recognize.

1. Characteristics and Differences of the Three Red Tones
Observed from left to right, these three colors do not follow a simple progression from light to dark or warm to cool. Instead, their color character follows a "slightly cool and bright – warm orange-red – slightly cool and deep" path:
- Scarlet
- Color Direction: Positioned on the left at the brightest spot. It presents a vivid, clear red with a slight inclination toward cool tones.
- Dilution & Brightness: Holds the highest brightness among the three colors. It displays a vibrant performance at high concentration and forms gentle pink tones when diluted, appearing lightest overall.
- Texture & Transparency: Demonstrates good transparency and a natural layering behavior.


- Real Red
- Color Direction: Positioned in the middle, maintaining the qualities of a standard red. Among the three, it shows the most noticeable inclination toward warm tones, containing recognizable orange-red directions.
- Overall Balance: Holds a balanced position without appearing distinctly cool or overly dark. It feels fuller than Scarlet while preserving more brightness than Carmine.
- Texture & Transparency: Both transparency and color density sit at a medium level.


- Carmine
- Color Direction: Positioned on the right, turning back toward cooler tones as the shade extends into deep red and burgundy directions.
- Color Density & Weight: Reveals a noticeably deeper overall effect with the highest color density and visual weight. Even when diluted, it retains a clear color presence and presents a rich, deep red tone at high concentration.
- Texture & Structure: The surface layer feels stable and displays a distinct visual presence.


2. Transparency and Dried Surface Structure
- Transparency: The colors in this group belong to a semi-transparent watercolor system. When diluted, they form smooth color transitions while preserving the structural texture of the material.
- Dried State: The paints dry to a natural matte surface without producing noticeable shine.
- Layer Distribution: After drying, distinct layer structures and pigment distributions can be observed across the different colors.

3. Behavior in Color Mixing Systems
- With Blue Tones: Scarlet combined with blue tends to form bright, cooler violet tones. Real Red acts as a connecting bridge between orange and violet. Carmine paired with blue creates deeper, richer purple and violet tones.
- With Yellow Tones: All three red shades produce different levels of orange transitions.
- With Green Tones: They establish distinct warm-cool contrasts within the painting.

4. Format and Storage
All colors in this group are produced in the standard half pan format. This specification allows many colors to fit into a compact space. The individual half pan design makes it easy to observe differences in temperature, transparency, and color density directly, while simplifying storage, sorting, and daily carrying.
